eBeam the new face of the Blackboard

Tired of the same old chalk board? Are your students bored and inattentive due to the over exposure throughout their entire school career to the chalk and talk way? Well, fear not because as main stream technology advances so does technology created for the classroom. The piece of technology referred to in this case is the eBeam virtual white board. Created and sold by Luida Inc. this technology is portable, easy to utilise and most importantly it is found engaging by students.
The systems comes out of the box with a stylus, a receiver, cable and plugs needed and different attachments which can be used for different surfaces. The setup process is fairly simple with an intermediate knowledge of PC software and hardware needed to setup, which in the event of a lack of an installation CD and also online video tutorial exist. It can be used with almost any device whether laptop or desktop and only needs to be installed, it also requires a projector and has blue tooth allowing for wireless link up to your PC.

After completing the initial setup and install the utilisation of the eBeam system is as easy an limited to one's imagination. This is as a result of the fact that it operates exactly as a black board but with added features. it can be incorporated into all lessons however with the added features of multimedia such as sound and videos. All of the work and keystrokes (this refers to every time a change is made in a document) can be saved, this saves time for records and evaluation. Notes can also be emailed to students or replayed for those who miss class on any particular day.
This system also serves to bring the excitement back into the classroom as it engages students. Today's children are referred to as children of the technological age, so it should be no surprise that the gravitate towards anything having to do with technology. As early as three and in some cases two years old, they are able to open and use simple apps on devices such as cellphones mp3 players and the PC. The chalk and talk way therefore does not stimulate or motivate them to learn, but give them an eBeam interactive white board and you immediately receive their undivided attention. They become inquisitive and that my dear friends is half the battle as it is our goals as educators to foster a love for knowledge in our young wards and no greater seed can be sown than that of curiosity.
What, you've still got that chalk and duster, put it away and journey the eBeam blackboard into the new wave of the future. So now you know and knowing is half of the battle. The eBeam interactive whiteboard it may already be in a school near you.

Roadmap to unlocking the potential of the mind

A
mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

It has been suggested that the mind mapping technique can improve learning/study efficiency up to 15% over conventional note taking.

By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject, and the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes.

More than this, Mind Maps encourage creative problem solving, and they hold information in a format that your mind finds easy to remember and quick to review

Applications of Mind Mapping for Education

  • Lesson planning and preparation.
  • Curriculum planning.
  • Providing students with an overview of a subject.
  • Teaching tool in the classroom.
  • Student assessment.
  • A tool which can be passed on to students to use themselves.
Mind mapping software also exist to make the process faster and more interactive within the class room. Here are some free software packages :

There are also many pieces of proprietary software that allow the creation of mind maps. A few of which include:

Mind Mapping for Education will greatly enhance your teaching skills, benefiting you – and your pupils.

Blogs as an educational resource

The word blog comes from the joining of the words web and log. It is a type of website that is maintained by usually an individual with regular entries that may record events, have video or pictures or just contain general commentary. Entries are usually archived and are displayed in a reverse chronological order.

The use of blogs varies as blogs provide news on many different subjects, function as personal diaries, records of events and are increasingly as educational tools. As such blogs are now considered to be an invaluable educational resource, used by teachers worldwide to supplement and enrich lessons and the classroom experience. Further information can be gained from Mr. Stephen Downes blog Blogs in Education

Haiti

Last year at CHOGM Prime Minister Manning joked in his keynote speech that T&T had a liquidity problem during this time of recession. Tonight he stated we would only give $1m US at this time and wait to see what else is needed as "Things are very tight financially in Trinidad and Tobago".

"I think of all the blessings T&T has, and how we have squandered them, and reflect on the constant series of disasters in Haiti, and I can only say this world is truly not a fair one." - Anon
